Apixaban is a medication used to prevent strokes in people with a certain type of irregular heartbeat called nonvalvular atrial fibrillation, as well as to treat and prevent blood clots in the legs and lungs. It works by blocking a specific factor in the blood that helps clots form, which reduces the risk of dangerous clots. You typically take it as a tablet, with the usual starting dose being 5 mg taken twice a day, but it can be lower for some patients based on age or weight. It's important to know that you should not take it if you have active bleeding or a severe allergic reaction to it. Additionally, if you are taking strong medications that affect the liver, like ketoconazole, your dose of apixaban may need to be reduced.
