Osmitrol is a medication used to lower pressure inside the brain and treat swelling in the brain, as well as to reduce high pressure in the eyes. It works by drawing water out of cells and into the bloodstream, which helps decrease swelling and pressure. The medication is given through an intravenous (IV) infusion, typically starting at a dose of 0.25 grams per kilogram of body weight every 6 to 8 hours for brain pressure, or 1.5 to 2 grams per kilogram as a single dose for eye pressure. It's important to know that Osmitrol should not be used if you have severe kidney problems or are unable to produce urine. Additionally, it should not be given at the same time as blood products, as this can cause serious complications.
