Mannitol is a medication used to reduce pressure in the brain and treat swelling in the brain, as well as to lower high pressure in the eyes. It works by drawing water out of cells and into the bloodstream, which helps to decrease swelling and pressure. The medication is given through an intravenous (IV) infusion, usually starting at a dose of 0.25 grams per kilogram of body weight every 6 to 8 hours for brain pressure, or 1.5 to 2 grams per kilogram as a single dose for eye pressure. It's important to know that mannitol should not be used if you have severe kidney problems or are not producing urine. Additionally, it should not be given at the same time as blood products to avoid complications.
