Nesacaine is a local anesthetic used to numb specific areas of the body during procedures, helping to block pain signals from nerves. It works by interrupting the way nerves send messages to the brain, effectively stopping the sensation of pain. The medication can be given as a single injection or through a catheter, with a starting dose of up to 11 mg per kilogram of body weight for adults, not exceeding 800 mg total, and adjustments may be needed for children or those with certain health conditions. It's important to know that Nesacaine should not be used in patients who are allergic to similar anesthetics in the PABA ester group. Additionally, caution is advised when using it with ergot-type oxytocic drugs, as this combination can lead to severe high blood pressure.
