Voriconazole is an antifungal medication used to treat serious fungal infections, including invasive aspergillosis and certain types of Candida infections. It works by stopping the growth of fungi by interfering with their ability to produce a vital component of their cell membranes. The medication is usually taken as an oral tablet or suspension, starting with a loading dose of 6 mg/kg every 12 hours for the first day, followed by a maintenance dose of 4 mg/kg every 12 hours, with a maximum oral dose of 200 mg every 12 hours. It's important to know that voriconazole can cause liver problems, so regular monitoring of liver function is necessary during treatment. Additionally, voriconazole should not be taken with certain medications like efavirenz, as this can significantly reduce its effectiveness.
