Amoxicillin is an antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections, including those in the ear, nose, throat, skin, and urinary tract, as well as certain stomach infections. It works by stopping bacteria from building their protective walls, which leads to their death. The medication is usually taken in tablet form, with adults starting at 750 mg to 1750 mg per day, divided into doses every 8 to 12 hours, while children over 3 months may take 20 to 45 mg per kilogram of body weight per day. It's important to note that if you've ever had a serious allergic reaction to amoxicillin or similar antibiotics, you should not take it. Additionally, if you are taking probenecid, a medication used to treat gout, it can affect how amoxicillin is processed in your body.
